Number of squares = (Figure number x 2 - 1)²

Number of squares for Figure 29
= (29 x 2 - 1)²
= 57 x 57
= 3249

Number of shaded squares for Figure 31
= ((31 - 1) x 2)²
= 60 x 60
= 3600

Figure number = {(√ Number of squares) + 1} ÷ 2

Figure number with 36 squares
= {(√36 + 1) ÷ 2
= (6 + 1) ÷ 2
= 7 ÷ 2
