Cathy bought 27 pears and 15 oranges on Saturday. Each day, she ate 5 pears and 1 orange. She started eating her fruits on Sunday.
- At the end of which day would there be an equal number of pears and oranges left? Give your answer in the following format. (Eg Monday)
- How many more oranges than pears were there on Wednesday?

Pears |
Oranges |
Before |
27 |
15 |
Change |
- 5 u |
- 1 u |
After |
27 - 5 u |
15 - 1 u |
(a)
Let the number of days be 1 u.
The number of oranges and pears in the end is equal.
27 - 5 u = 15 - 1 u
5 u - 1 u = 27 - 15
4 u = 12
1 u = 12 ÷ 4 = 3
Cathy ate for 3 days from Sunday onwards. At the end of Tuesday, there would be an equal number of pears and oranges left.
(b)
Number of days from Sunday to Wednesday = 4
Number of pears left on Wednesday
= 27 - (5 x 4)
= 27 - 20
= 7
Number of oranges left on Wednesday
= 15 - (1 x 4)
= 15 - 4
= 11
Number of oranges more than pears
= 11 - 7
= 4
Answer(s): (a) Tuesday; (b) 4
