Min bought 25 oranges and 16 mangoes on Saturday. Each day, she ate 4 oranges and 1 mango. She started eating her fruits on Sunday.
- At the end of which day would there be an equal number of oranges and mangoes left? Give your answer in the following format. (Eg Monday)
- How many more mangoes than oranges were there on Wednesday?
|
Oranges |
Mangoes |
Before |
25 |
16 |
Change |
- 4 u |
- 1 u |
After |
25 - 4 u |
16 - 1 u |
(a)
Let the number of days be 1 u.
The number of mangoes and oranges in the end is equal.
25 - 4 u = 16 - 1 u
4 u - 1 u = 25 - 16
3 u = 9
1 u = 9 ÷ 3 = 3
Min ate for 3 days from Sunday onwards. At the end of Tuesday, there would be an equal number of oranges and mangoes left.
(b)
Number of days from Sunday to Wednesday = 4
Number of oranges left on Wednesday
= 25 - (4 x 4)
= 25 - 16
= 9
Number of mangoes left on Wednesday
= 16 - (1 x 4)
= 16 - 4
= 12
Number of mangoes more than oranges
= 12 - 9
= 3
Answer(s): (a) Tuesday; (b) 3
