Shiyun bought 31 mangoes and 19 lemons on Tuesday. Each day, she ate 5 mangoes and 1 lemon. She started eating her fruits on Wednesday.
- At the end of which day would there be an equal number of mangoes and lemons left? Give your answer in the following format. (Eg Monday)
- How many more lemons than mangoes were there on Saturday?
|
Mangoes |
Lemons |
Before |
31 |
19 |
Change |
- 5 u |
- 1 u |
After |
31 - 5 u |
19 - 1 u |
(a)
Let the number of days be 1 u.
The number of lemons and mangoes in the end is equal.
31 - 5 u = 19 - 1 u
5 u - 1 u = 31 - 19
4 u = 12
1 u = 12 ÷ 4 = 3
Shiyun ate for 3 days from Wednesday onwards. At the end of Friday, there would be an equal number of mangoes and lemons left.
(b)
Number of days from Wednesday to Saturday = 4
Number of mangoes left on Saturday
= 31 - (5 x 4)
= 31 - 20
= 11
Number of lemons left on Saturday
= 19 - (1 x 4)
= 19 - 4
= 15
Number of lemons more than mangoes
= 15 - 11
= 4
Answer(s): (a) Friday; (b) 4
