Jean bought 26 pears and 10 apples on Sunday. Each day, she ate 5 pears and 1 apple. She started eating her fruits on Monday.
- At the end of which day would there be an equal number of pears and apples left? Give your answer in the following format. (Eg Monday)
- How many more apples than pears were there on Friday?

Pears |
Apples |
Before |
26 |
10 |
Change |
- 5 u |
- 1 u |
After |
26 - 5 u |
10 - 1 u |
(a)
Let the number of days be 1 u.
The number of apples and pears in the end is equal.
26 - 5 u = 10 - 1 u
5 u - 1 u = 26 - 10
4 u = 16
1 u = 16 ÷ 4 = 4
Jean ate for 4 days from Monday onwards. At the end of Thursday, there would be an equal number of pears and apples left.
(b)
Number of days from Monday to Friday = 5
Number of pears left on Friday
= 26 - (5 x 5)
= 26 - 25
= 1
Number of apples left on Friday
= 10 - (1 x 5)
= 10 - 5
= 5
Number of apples more than pears
= 5 - 1
= 4
Answer(s): (a) Thursday; (b) 4
