Wendy bought 30 passion fruits and 18 lemons on Monday. Each day, she ate 5 passion fruits and 1 lemon. She started eating her fruits on Tuesday.
- At the end of which day would there be an equal number of passion fruits and lemons left? Give your answer in the following format. (Eg Monday)
- How many more lemons than passion fruits were there on Friday?
|
Passion Fruits |
Lemons |
Before |
30 |
18 |
Change |
- 5 u |
- 1 u |
After |
30 - 5 u |
18 - 1 u |
(a)
Let the number of days be 1 u.
The number of lemons and passion fruits in the end is equal.
30 - 5 u = 18 - 1 u
5 u - 1 u = 30 - 18
4 u = 12
1 u = 12 ÷ 4 = 3
Wendy ate for 3 days from Tuesday onwards. At the end of Thursday, there would be an equal number of passion fruits and lemons left.
(b)
Number of days from Tuesday to Friday = 4
Number of passion fruits left on Friday
= 30 - (5 x 4)
= 30 - 20
= 10
Number of lemons left on Friday
= 18 - (1 x 4)
= 18 - 4
= 14
Number of lemons more than passion fruits
= 14 - 10
= 4
Answer(s): (a) Thursday; (b) 4
