Hazel bought 22 persimmons and 10 mangosteens on Saturday. Each day, she ate 4 persimmons and 1 mangosteen. She started eating her fruits on Sunday.
- At the end of which day would there be an equal number of persimmons and mangosteens left? Give your answer in the following format. (Eg Monday)
- How many more mangosteens than persimmons were there on Thursday?
|
Persimmons |
Mangosteens |
Before |
22 |
10 |
Change |
- 4 u |
- 1 u |
After |
22 - 4 u |
10 - 1 u |
(a)
Let the number of days be 1 u.
The number of mangosteens and persimmons in the end is equal.
22 - 4 u = 10 - 1 u
4 u - 1 u = 22 - 10
3 u = 12
1 u = 12 ÷ 3 = 4
Hazel ate for 4 days from Sunday onwards. At the end of Wednesday, there would be an equal number of persimmons and mangosteens left.
(b)
Number of days from Sunday to Thursday = 5
Number of persimmons left on Thursday
= 22 - (4 x 5)
= 22 - 20
= 2
Number of mangosteens left on Thursday
= 10 - (1 x 5)
= 10 - 5
= 5
Number of mangosteens more than persimmons
= 5 - 2
= 3
Answer(s): (a) Wednesday; (b) 3
