Kimberly bought 34 mangoes and 19 persimmons on Tuesday. Each day, she ate 4 mangoes and 1 persimmon. She started eating her fruits on Wednesday.
- At the end of which day would there be an equal number of mangoes and persimmons left? Give your answer in the following format. (Eg Monday)
- How many more persimmons than mangoes were there on Monday?

Mangoes |
Persimmons |
Before |
34 |
19 |
Change |
- 4 u |
- 1 u |
After |
34 - 4 u |
19 - 1 u |
(a)
Let the number of days be 1 u.
The number of persimmons and mangoes in the end is equal.
34 - 4 u = 19 - 1 u
4 u - 1 u = 34 - 19
3 u = 15
1 u = 15 ÷ 3 = 5
Kimberly ate for 5 days from Wednesday onwards. At the end of Sunday, there would be an equal number of mangoes and persimmons left.
(b)
Number of days from Wednesday to Monday = 6
Number of mangoes left on Monday
= 34 - (4 x 6)
= 34 - 24
= 10
Number of persimmons left on Monday
= 19 - (1 x 6)
= 19 - 6
= 13
Number of persimmons more than mangoes
= 13 - 10
= 3
Answer(s): (a) Sunday; (b) 3
