Irene bought 20 chikoos and 14 mangosteens on Thursday. Each day, she ate 3 chikoos and 1 mangosteen. She started eating her fruits on Friday.
- At the end of which day would there be an equal number of chikoos and mangosteens left? Give your answer in the following format. (Eg Monday)
- How many more mangosteens than chikoos were there on Monday?
|
Chikoos |
Mangosteens |
Before |
20 |
14 |
Change |
- 3 u |
- 1 u |
After |
20 - 3 u |
14 - 1 u |
(a)
Let the number of days be 1 u.
The number of mangosteens and chikoos in the end is equal.
20 - 3 u = 14 - 1 u
3 u - 1 u = 20 - 14
2 u = 6
1 u = 6 ÷ 2 = 3
Irene ate for 3 days from Friday onwards. At the end of Sunday, there would be an equal number of chikoos and mangosteens left.
(b)
Number of days from Friday to Monday = 4
Number of chikoos left on Monday
= 20 - (3 x 4)
= 20 - 12
= 8
Number of mangosteens left on Monday
= 14 - (1 x 4)
= 14 - 4
= 10
Number of mangosteens more than chikoos
= 10 - 8
= 2
Answer(s): (a) Sunday; (b) 2
