Lynn bought 32 kiwis and 17 pears on Wednesday. Each day, she ate 4 kiwis and 1 pear. She started eating her fruits on Thursday.
- At the end of which day would there be an equal number of kiwis and pears left? Give your answer in the following format. (Eg Monday)
- How many more pears than kiwis were there on Tuesday?

Kiwis |
Pears |
Before |
32 |
17 |
Change |
- 4 u |
- 1 u |
After |
32 - 4 u |
17 - 1 u |
(a)
Let the number of days be 1 u.
The number of pears and kiwis in the end is equal.
32 - 4 u = 17 - 1 u
4 u - 1 u = 32 - 17
3 u = 15
1 u = 15 ÷ 3 = 5
Lynn ate for 5 days from Thursday onwards. At the end of Monday, there would be an equal number of kiwis and pears left.
(b)
Number of days from Thursday to Tuesday = 6
Number of kiwis left on Tuesday
= 32 - (4 x 6)
= 32 - 24
= 8
Number of pears left on Tuesday
= 17 - (1 x 6)
= 17 - 6
= 11
Number of pears more than kiwis
= 11 - 8
= 3
Answer(s): (a) Monday; (b) 3
