Fanny bought 34 oranges and 14 starfruits on Monday. Each day, she ate 5 oranges and 1 starfruit. She started eating her fruits on Tuesday.
- At the end of which day would there be an equal number of oranges and starfruits left? Give your answer in the following format. (Eg Monday)
- How many more starfruits than oranges were there on Sunday?

Oranges |
Starfruits |
Before |
34 |
14 |
Change |
- 5 u |
- 1 u |
After |
34 - 5 u |
14 - 1 u |
(a)
Let the number of days be 1 u.
The number of starfruits and oranges in the end is equal.
34 - 5 u = 14 - 1 u
5 u - 1 u = 34 - 14
4 u = 20
1 u = 20 ÷ 4 = 5
Fanny ate for 5 days from Tuesday onwards. At the end of Saturday, there would be an equal number of oranges and starfruits left.
(b)
Number of days from Tuesday to Sunday = 6
Number of oranges left on Sunday
= 34 - (5 x 6)
= 34 - 30
= 4
Number of starfruits left on Sunday
= 14 - (1 x 6)
= 14 - 6
= 8
Number of starfruits more than oranges
= 8 - 4
= 4
Answer(s): (a) Saturday; (b) 4
