Victoria bought 28 pears and 18 pomegranates on Sunday. Each day, she ate 3 pears and 1 pomegranate. She started eating her fruits on Monday.
- At the end of which day would there be an equal number of pears and pomegranates left? Give your answer in the following format. (Eg Monday)
- How many more pomegranates than pears were there on Saturday?

Pears |
Pomegranates |
Before |
28 |
18 |
Change |
- 3 u |
- 1 u |
After |
28 - 3 u |
18 - 1 u |
(a)
Let the number of days be 1 u.
The number of pomegranates and pears in the end is equal.
28 - 3 u = 18 - 1 u
3 u - 1 u = 28 - 18
2 u = 10
1 u = 10 ÷ 2 = 5
Victoria ate for 5 days from Monday onwards. At the end of Friday, there would be an equal number of pears and pomegranates left.
(b)
Number of days from Monday to Saturday = 6
Number of pears left on Saturday
= 28 - (3 x 6)
= 28 - 18
= 10
Number of pomegranates left on Saturday
= 18 - (1 x 6)
= 18 - 6
= 12
Number of pomegranates more than pears
= 12 - 10
= 2
Answer(s): (a) Friday; (b) 2
