Nicole bought 23 lemons and 13 starfruits on Monday. Each day, she ate 3 lemons and 1 starfruit. She started eating her fruits on Tuesday.
- At the end of which day would there be an equal number of lemons and starfruits left? Give your answer in the following format. (Eg Monday)
- How many more starfruits than lemons were there on Sunday?
|
Lemons |
Starfruits |
Before |
23 |
13 |
Change |
- 3 u |
- 1 u |
After |
23 - 3 u |
13 - 1 u |
(a)
Let the number of days be 1 u.
The number of starfruits and lemons in the end is equal.
23 - 3 u = 13 - 1 u
3 u - 1 u = 23 - 13
2 u = 10
1 u = 10 ÷ 2 = 5
Nicole ate for 5 days from Tuesday onwards. At the end of Saturday, there would be an equal number of lemons and starfruits left.
(b)
Number of days from Tuesday to Sunday = 6
Number of lemons left on Sunday
= 23 - (3 x 6)
= 23 - 18
= 5
Number of starfruits left on Sunday
= 13 - (1 x 6)
= 13 - 6
= 7
Number of starfruits more than lemons
= 7 - 5
= 2
Answer(s): (a) Saturday; (b) 2
