Vanessa bought 22 oranges and 16 mangosteens on Wednesday. Each day, she ate 3 oranges and 1 mangosteen. She started eating her fruits on Thursday.
- At the end of which day would there be an equal number of oranges and mangosteens left? Give your answer in the following format. (Eg Monday)
- How many more mangosteens than oranges were there on Sunday?

Oranges |
Mangosteens |
Before |
22 |
16 |
Change |
- 3 u |
- 1 u |
After |
22 - 3 u |
16 - 1 u |
(a)
Let the number of days be 1 u.
The number of mangosteens and oranges in the end is equal.
22 - 3 u = 16 - 1 u
3 u - 1 u = 22 - 16
2 u = 6
1 u = 6 ÷ 2 = 3
Vanessa ate for 3 days from Thursday onwards. At the end of Saturday, there would be an equal number of oranges and mangosteens left.
(b)
Number of days from Thursday to Sunday = 4
Number of oranges left on Sunday
= 22 - (3 x 4)
= 22 - 12
= 10
Number of mangosteens left on Sunday
= 16 - (1 x 4)
= 16 - 4
= 12
Number of mangosteens more than oranges
= 12 - 10
= 2
Answer(s): (a) Saturday; (b) 2
