Nora bought 16 kiwis and 8 mangoes on Thursday. Each day, she ate 3 kiwis and 1 mango. She started eating her fruits on Friday.
- At the end of which day would there be an equal number of kiwis and mangoes left? Give your answer in the following format. (Eg Monday)
- How many more mangoes than kiwis were there on Tuesday?

Kiwis |
Mangoes |
Before |
16 |
8 |
Change |
- 3 u |
- 1 u |
After |
16 - 3 u |
8 - 1 u |
(a)
Let the number of days be 1 u.
The number of mangoes and kiwis in the end is equal.
16 - 3 u = 8 - 1 u
3 u - 1 u = 16 - 8
2 u = 8
1 u = 8 ÷ 2 = 4
Nora ate for 4 days from Friday onwards. At the end of Monday, there would be an equal number of kiwis and mangoes left.
(b)
Number of days from Friday to Tuesday = 5
Number of kiwis left on Tuesday
= 16 - (3 x 5)
= 16 - 15
= 1
Number of mangoes left on Tuesday
= 8 - (1 x 5)
= 8 - 5
= 3
Number of mangoes more than kiwis
= 3 - 1
= 2
Answer(s): (a) Monday; (b) 2
