Xylia bought 29 persimmons and 14 pomegranates on Saturday. Each day, she ate 4 persimmons and 1 pomegranate. She started eating her fruits on Sunday.
- At the end of which day would there be an equal number of persimmons and pomegranates left? Give your answer in the following format. (Eg Monday)
- How many more pomegranates than persimmons were there on Friday?

Persimmons |
Pomegranates |
Before |
29 |
14 |
Change |
- 4 u |
- 1 u |
After |
29 - 4 u |
14 - 1 u |
(a)
Let the number of days be 1 u.
The number of pomegranates and persimmons in the end is equal.
29 - 4 u = 14 - 1 u
4 u - 1 u = 29 - 14
3 u = 15
1 u = 15 ÷ 3 = 5
Xylia ate for 5 days from Sunday onwards. At the end of Thursday, there would be an equal number of persimmons and pomegranates left.
(b)
Number of days from Sunday to Friday = 6
Number of persimmons left on Friday
= 29 - (4 x 6)
= 29 - 24
= 5
Number of pomegranates left on Friday
= 14 - (1 x 6)
= 14 - 6
= 8
Number of pomegranates more than persimmons
= 8 - 5
= 3
Answer(s): (a) Thursday; (b) 3
