Emily bought 31 mangosteens and 16 oranges on Monday. Each day, she ate 4 mangosteens and 1 orange. She started eating her fruits on Tuesday.
- At the end of which day would there be an equal number of mangosteens and oranges left? Give your answer in the following format. (Eg Monday)
- How many more oranges than mangosteens were there on Sunday?

Mangosteens |
Oranges |
Before |
31 |
16 |
Change |
- 4 u |
- 1 u |
After |
31 - 4 u |
16 - 1 u |
(a)
Let the number of days be 1 u.
The number of oranges and mangosteens in the end is equal.
31 - 4 u = 16 - 1 u
4 u - 1 u = 31 - 16
3 u = 15
1 u = 15 ÷ 3 = 5
Emily ate for 5 days from Tuesday onwards. At the end of Saturday, there would be an equal number of mangosteens and oranges left.
(b)
Number of days from Tuesday to Sunday = 6
Number of mangosteens left on Sunday
= 31 - (4 x 6)
= 31 - 24
= 7
Number of oranges left on Sunday
= 16 - (1 x 6)
= 16 - 6
= 10
Number of oranges more than mangosteens
= 10 - 7
= 3
Answer(s): (a) Saturday; (b) 3
