Gabby bought 19 persimmons and 10 mangoes on Thursday. Each day, she ate 4 persimmons and 1 mango. She started eating her fruits on Friday.
- At the end of which day would there be an equal number of persimmons and mangoes left? Give your answer in the following format. (Eg Monday)
- How many more mangoes than persimmons were there on Monday?

Persimmons |
Mangoes |
Before |
19 |
10 |
Change |
- 4 u |
- 1 u |
After |
19 - 4 u |
10 - 1 u |
(a)
Let the number of days be 1 u.
The number of mangoes and persimmons in the end is equal.
19 - 4 u = 10 - 1 u
4 u - 1 u = 19 - 10
3 u = 9
1 u = 9 ÷ 3 = 3
Gabby ate for 3 days from Friday onwards. At the end of Sunday, there would be an equal number of persimmons and mangoes left.
(b)
Number of days from Friday to Monday = 4
Number of persimmons left on Monday
= 19 - (4 x 4)
= 19 - 16
= 3
Number of mangoes left on Monday
= 10 - (1 x 4)
= 10 - 4
= 6
Number of mangoes more than persimmons
= 6 - 3
= 3
Answer(s): (a) Sunday; (b) 3
