Marion bought 18 pears and 9 kiwis on Tuesday. Each day, she ate 4 pears and 1 kiwi. She started eating her fruits on Wednesday.
- At the end of which day would there be an equal number of pears and kiwis left? Give your answer in the following format. (Eg Monday)
- How many more kiwis than pears were there on Saturday?

Pears |
Kiwis |
Before |
18 |
9 |
Change |
- 4 u |
- 1 u |
After |
18 - 4 u |
9 - 1 u |
(a)
Let the number of days be 1 u.
The number of kiwis and pears in the end is equal.
18 - 4 u = 9 - 1 u
4 u - 1 u = 18 - 9
3 u = 9
1 u = 9 ÷ 3 = 3
Marion ate for 3 days from Wednesday onwards. At the end of Friday, there would be an equal number of pears and kiwis left.
(b)
Number of days from Wednesday to Saturday = 4
Number of pears left on Saturday
= 18 - (4 x 4)
= 18 - 16
= 2
Number of kiwis left on Saturday
= 9 - (1 x 4)
= 9 - 4
= 5
Number of kiwis more than pears
= 5 - 2
= 3
Answer(s): (a) Friday; (b) 3
