Opal bought 15 pomegranates and 9 passion fruits on Saturday. Each day, she ate 3 pomegranates and 1 passion fruit. She started eating her fruits on Sunday.
- At the end of which day would there be an equal number of pomegranates and passion fruits left? Give your answer in the following format. (Eg Monday)
- How many more passion fruits than pomegranates were there on Wednesday?
|
Pomegranates |
Passion Fruits |
Before |
15 |
9 |
Change |
- 3 u |
- 1 u |
After |
15 - 3 u |
9 - 1 u |
(a)
Let the number of days be 1 u.
The number of passion fruits and pomegranates in the end is equal.
15 - 3 u = 9 - 1 u
3 u - 1 u = 15 - 9
2 u = 6
1 u = 6 ÷ 2 = 3
Opal ate for 3 days from Sunday onwards. At the end of Tuesday, there would be an equal number of pomegranates and passion fruits left.
(b)
Number of days from Sunday to Wednesday = 4
Number of pomegranates left on Wednesday
= 15 - (3 x 4)
= 15 - 12
= 3
Number of passion fruits left on Wednesday
= 9 - (1 x 4)
= 9 - 4
= 5
Number of passion fruits more than pomegranates
= 5 - 3
= 2
Answer(s): (a) Tuesday; (b) 2
