Gillian bought 34 pomegranates and 14 passion fruits on Wednesday. Each day, she ate 5 pomegranates and 1 passion fruit. She started eating her fruits on Thursday.
- At the end of which day would there be an equal number of pomegranates and passion fruits left? Give your answer in the following format. (Eg Monday)
- How many more passion fruits than pomegranates were there on Tuesday?
|
Pomegranates |
Passion Fruits |
Before |
34 |
14 |
Change |
- 5 u |
- 1 u |
After |
34 - 5 u |
14 - 1 u |
(a)
Let the number of days be 1 u.
The number of passion fruits and pomegranates in the end is equal.
34 - 5 u = 14 - 1 u
5 u - 1 u = 34 - 14
4 u = 20
1 u = 20 ÷ 4 = 5
Gillian ate for 5 days from Thursday onwards. At the end of Monday, there would be an equal number of pomegranates and passion fruits left.
(b)
Number of days from Thursday to Tuesday = 6
Number of pomegranates left on Tuesday
= 34 - (5 x 6)
= 34 - 30
= 4
Number of passion fruits left on Tuesday
= 14 - (1 x 6)
= 14 - 6
= 8
Number of passion fruits more than pomegranates
= 8 - 4
= 4
Answer(s): (a) Monday; (b) 4
