Jade bought 30 pomegranates and 14 apples on Friday. Each day, she ate 5 pomegranates and 1 apple. She started eating her fruits on Saturday.
- At the end of which day would there be an equal number of pomegranates and apples left? Give your answer in the following format. (Eg Monday)
- How many more apples than pomegranates were there on Wednesday?

Pomegranates |
Apples |
Before |
30 |
14 |
Change |
- 5 u |
- 1 u |
After |
30 - 5 u |
14 - 1 u |
(a)
Let the number of days be 1 u.
The number of apples and pomegranates in the end is equal.
30 - 5 u = 14 - 1 u
5 u - 1 u = 30 - 14
4 u = 16
1 u = 16 ÷ 4 = 4
Jade ate for 4 days from Saturday onwards. At the end of Tuesday, there would be an equal number of pomegranates and apples left.
(b)
Number of days from Saturday to Wednesday = 5
Number of pomegranates left on Wednesday
= 30 - (5 x 5)
= 30 - 25
= 5
Number of apples left on Wednesday
= 14 - (1 x 5)
= 14 - 5
= 9
Number of apples more than pomegranates
= 9 - 5
= 4
Answer(s): (a) Tuesday; (b) 4
