Cindy bought 30 pomegranates and 15 starfruits on Tuesday. Each day, she ate 4 pomegranates and 1 starfruit. She started eating her fruits on Wednesday.
- At the end of which day would there be an equal number of pomegranates and starfruits left? Give your answer in the following format. (Eg Monday)
- How many more starfruits than pomegranates were there on Monday?
|
Pomegranates |
Starfruits |
Before |
30 |
15 |
Change |
- 4 u |
- 1 u |
After |
30 - 4 u |
15 - 1 u |
(a)
Let the number of days be 1 u.
The number of starfruits and pomegranates in the end is equal.
30 - 4 u = 15 - 1 u
4 u - 1 u = 30 - 15
3 u = 15
1 u = 15 ÷ 3 = 5
Cindy ate for 5 days from Wednesday onwards. At the end of Sunday, there would be an equal number of pomegranates and starfruits left.
(b)
Number of days from Wednesday to Monday = 6
Number of pomegranates left on Monday
= 30 - (4 x 6)
= 30 - 24
= 6
Number of starfruits left on Monday
= 15 - (1 x 6)
= 15 - 6
= 9
Number of starfruits more than pomegranates
= 9 - 6
= 3
Answer(s): (a) Sunday; (b) 3
