Winnie bought 28 starfruits and 12 persimmons on Sunday. Each day, she ate 5 starfruits and 1 persimmon. She started eating her fruits on Monday.
- At the end of which day would there be an equal number of starfruits and persimmons left? Give your answer in the following format. (Eg Monday)
- How many more persimmons than starfruits were there on Friday?

Starfruits |
Persimmons |
Before |
28 |
12 |
Change |
- 5 u |
- 1 u |
After |
28 - 5 u |
12 - 1 u |
(a)
Let the number of days be 1 u.
The number of persimmons and starfruits in the end is equal.
28 - 5 u = 12 - 1 u
5 u - 1 u = 28 - 12
4 u = 16
1 u = 16 ÷ 4 = 4
Winnie ate for 4 days from Monday onwards. At the end of Thursday, there would be an equal number of starfruits and persimmons left.
(b)
Number of days from Monday to Friday = 5
Number of starfruits left on Friday
= 28 - (5 x 5)
= 28 - 25
= 3
Number of persimmons left on Friday
= 12 - (1 x 5)
= 12 - 5
= 7
Number of persimmons more than starfruits
= 7 - 3
= 4
Answer(s): (a) Thursday; (b) 4
