Tammy bought 28 mangoes and 16 pears on Monday. Each day, she ate 4 mangoes and 1 pear. She started eating her fruits on Tuesday.
- At the end of which day would there be an equal number of mangoes and pears left? Give your answer in the following format. (Eg Monday)
- How many more pears than mangoes were there on Saturday?

Mangoes |
Pears |
Before |
28 |
16 |
Change |
- 4 u |
- 1 u |
After |
28 - 4 u |
16 - 1 u |
(a)
Let the number of days be 1 u.
The number of pears and mangoes in the end is equal.
28 - 4 u = 16 - 1 u
4 u - 1 u = 28 - 16
3 u = 12
1 u = 12 ÷ 3 = 4
Tammy ate for 4 days from Tuesday onwards. At the end of Friday, there would be an equal number of mangoes and pears left.
(b)
Number of days from Tuesday to Saturday = 5
Number of mangoes left on Saturday
= 28 - (4 x 5)
= 28 - 20
= 8
Number of pears left on Saturday
= 16 - (1 x 5)
= 16 - 5
= 11
Number of pears more than mangoes
= 11 - 8
= 3
Answer(s): (a) Friday; (b) 3
