Erika bought 27 mangosteens and 11 mangoes on Friday. Each day, she ate 5 mangosteens and 1 mango. She started eating her fruits on Saturday.
- At the end of which day would there be an equal number of mangosteens and mangoes left? Give your answer in the following format. (Eg Monday)
- How many more mangoes than mangosteens were there on Wednesday?

Mangosteens |
Mangoes |
Before |
27 |
11 |
Change |
- 5 u |
- 1 u |
After |
27 - 5 u |
11 - 1 u |
(a)
Let the number of days be 1 u.
The number of mangoes and mangosteens in the end is equal.
27 - 5 u = 11 - 1 u
5 u - 1 u = 27 - 11
4 u = 16
1 u = 16 ÷ 4 = 4
Erika ate for 4 days from Saturday onwards. At the end of Tuesday, there would be an equal number of mangosteens and mangoes left.
(b)
Number of days from Saturday to Wednesday = 5
Number of mangosteens left on Wednesday
= 27 - (5 x 5)
= 27 - 25
= 2
Number of mangoes left on Wednesday
= 11 - (1 x 5)
= 11 - 5
= 6
Number of mangoes more than mangosteens
= 6 - 2
= 4
Answer(s): (a) Tuesday; (b) 4
