Gillian bought 33 persimmons and 17 starfruits on Monday. Each day, she ate 5 persimmons and 1 starfruit. She started eating her fruits on Tuesday.
- At the end of which day would there be an equal number of persimmons and starfruits left? Give your answer in the following format. (Eg Monday)
- How many more starfruits than persimmons were there on Saturday?

Persimmons |
Starfruits |
Before |
33 |
17 |
Change |
- 5 u |
- 1 u |
After |
33 - 5 u |
17 - 1 u |
(a)
Let the number of days be 1 u.
The number of starfruits and persimmons in the end is equal.
33 - 5 u = 17 - 1 u
5 u - 1 u = 33 - 17
4 u = 16
1 u = 16 ÷ 4 = 4
Gillian ate for 4 days from Tuesday onwards. At the end of Friday, there would be an equal number of persimmons and starfruits left.
(b)
Number of days from Tuesday to Saturday = 5
Number of persimmons left on Saturday
= 33 - (5 x 5)
= 33 - 25
= 8
Number of starfruits left on Saturday
= 17 - (1 x 5)
= 17 - 5
= 12
Number of starfruits more than persimmons
= 12 - 8
= 4
Answer(s): (a) Friday; (b) 4
