Joelle bought 23 apples and 15 mangoes on Wednesday. Each day, she ate 3 apples and 1 mango. She started eating her fruits on Thursday.
- At the end of which day would there be an equal number of apples and mangoes left? Give your answer in the following format. (Eg Monday)
- How many more mangoes than apples were there on Monday?

Apples |
Mangoes |
Before |
23 |
15 |
Change |
- 3 u |
- 1 u |
After |
23 - 3 u |
15 - 1 u |
(a)
Let the number of days be 1 u.
The number of mangoes and apples in the end is equal.
23 - 3 u = 15 - 1 u
3 u - 1 u = 23 - 15
2 u = 8
1 u = 8 ÷ 2 = 4
Joelle ate for 4 days from Thursday onwards. At the end of Sunday, there would be an equal number of apples and mangoes left.
(b)
Number of days from Thursday to Monday = 5
Number of apples left on Monday
= 23 - (3 x 5)
= 23 - 15
= 8
Number of mangoes left on Monday
= 15 - (1 x 5)
= 15 - 5
= 10
Number of mangoes more than apples
= 10 - 8
= 2
Answer(s): (a) Sunday; (b) 2
