Natalie bought 25 mangoes and 13 starfruits on Tuesday. Each day, she ate 4 mangoes and 1 starfruit. She started eating her fruits on Wednesday.
- At the end of which day would there be an equal number of mangoes and starfruits left? Give your answer in the following format. (Eg Monday)
- How many more starfruits than mangoes were there on Sunday?
|
Mangoes |
Starfruits |
Before |
25 |
13 |
Change |
- 4 u |
- 1 u |
After |
25 - 4 u |
13 - 1 u |
(a)
Let the number of days be 1 u.
The number of starfruits and mangoes in the end is equal.
25 - 4 u = 13 - 1 u
4 u - 1 u = 25 - 13
3 u = 12
1 u = 12 ÷ 3 = 4
Natalie ate for 4 days from Wednesday onwards. At the end of Saturday, there would be an equal number of mangoes and starfruits left.
(b)
Number of days from Wednesday to Sunday = 5
Number of mangoes left on Sunday
= 25 - (4 x 5)
= 25 - 20
= 5
Number of starfruits left on Sunday
= 13 - (1 x 5)
= 13 - 5
= 8
Number of starfruits more than mangoes
= 8 - 5
= 3
Answer(s): (a) Saturday; (b) 3
