Cathy bought 23 persimmons and 11 oranges on Monday. Each day, she ate 5 persimmons and 1 orange. She started eating her fruits on Tuesday.
- At the end of which day would there be an equal number of persimmons and oranges left? Give your answer in the following format. (Eg Monday)
- How many more oranges than persimmons were there on Friday?

Persimmons |
Oranges |
Before |
23 |
11 |
Change |
- 5 u |
- 1 u |
After |
23 - 5 u |
11 - 1 u |
(a)
Let the number of days be 1 u.
The number of oranges and persimmons in the end is equal.
23 - 5 u = 11 - 1 u
5 u - 1 u = 23 - 11
4 u = 12
1 u = 12 ÷ 4 = 3
Cathy ate for 3 days from Tuesday onwards. At the end of Thursday, there would be an equal number of persimmons and oranges left.
(b)
Number of days from Tuesday to Friday = 4
Number of persimmons left on Friday
= 23 - (5 x 4)
= 23 - 20
= 3
Number of oranges left on Friday
= 11 - (1 x 4)
= 11 - 4
= 7
Number of oranges more than persimmons
= 7 - 3
= 4
Answer(s): (a) Thursday; (b) 4
