Wendy bought 21 mangoes and 13 starfruits on Sunday. Each day, she ate 3 mangoes and 1 starfruit. She started eating her fruits on Monday.
- At the end of which day would there be an equal number of mangoes and starfruits left? Give your answer in the following format. (Eg Monday)
- How many more starfruits than mangoes were there on Friday?
|
Mangoes |
Starfruits |
Before |
21 |
13 |
Change |
- 3 u |
- 1 u |
After |
21 - 3 u |
13 - 1 u |
(a)
Let the number of days be 1 u.
The number of starfruits and mangoes in the end is equal.
21 - 3 u = 13 - 1 u
3 u - 1 u = 21 - 13
2 u = 8
1 u = 8 ÷ 2 = 4
Wendy ate for 4 days from Monday onwards. At the end of Thursday, there would be an equal number of mangoes and starfruits left.
(b)
Number of days from Monday to Friday = 5
Number of mangoes left on Friday
= 21 - (3 x 5)
= 21 - 15
= 6
Number of starfruits left on Friday
= 13 - (1 x 5)
= 13 - 5
= 8
Number of starfruits more than mangoes
= 8 - 6
= 2
Answer(s): (a) Thursday; (b) 2
