Peter used 65 sticks to make a total of 12 octagons and pentagons. An octagon is made by 8 sticks and a pentagon is made by 5 sticks. How many of each type of shapes did he make?
- Number of octagons
- Number of pentagons
(a)
Assuming all are pentagons,
Number of sticks needed for the pentagons
= 5 x 12
= 60
Number of extra sticks left
= 65 - 60
= 12
Difference in the number of sticks between 1 octagon and 1 pentagon
= 8 - 5
= 3
Number of octagons
= 12 ÷ 3
= 4
(b)
Number of pentagons
= 12 - 4
= 8
Answer(s): (a) 3; (b) 8
