Tank M and Tank N had some vinegar in the ratio 7 : 5. After 40 litres of vinegar was transferred from Tank M to Tank N, the volume of vinegar in Tank N became 5 times as much as in Tank M. How much vinegar were there in the two tanks in all?
|
Tank M |
Tank N |
Total |
Before |
7x1 = 7 u |
5x1 = 5 u |
12x1 = 12 u |
Change |
- 40 |
+ 40 |
|
After |
1x2 = 2 u |
5x2 = 10 u |
6x2 = 12 u |
The total volume of vinegar in the tanks remained unchanged. Make the total volume at first and in the end the same. LCM of 6 and 12 is 12.
Amount of vinegar transferred from Tank M to Tank N
= 7 u - 2 u
= 5 u
5 u = 40
1 u = 40 ÷ 5 = 8
Total volume of vinegar in two tanks
= 12 u
= 12 x 8
= 96 ℓ
Answer(s): 96 ℓ
