Total number of squares = Pattern number x 3 + 5
Number of squares in Pattern 12
= 12 x 3 + 5
= 41

Pattern number x 3 + 5 = 101
Pattern number x 3 = 101 - 5
Pattern number x 3 = 96
Pattern number = 96 ÷ 3
Pattern number = 32
