Mrs Vaidev bought a skirt and a ring at a discount. She spent a total of $98.70 on these two items. She spent $54.30 more on the ring than on the skirt.

1. How much did she spend on the ring?
2. The total discount given for the two items was $23.30. She was given a 40% discount for the skirt. What was the percentage discount given for the ring?

Amount spent on the skirt = 1 u
Amount spent on the ring = 1 u + 54.30

Total amount spent on the skirt and the ring
= 1 u + 1 u + 54.30
= 2 u + 54.30

2 u + 54.30 = 98.70
2 u = 98.70 - 54.30
2 u = 44.40

1 u = 44.40 ÷ 2 = 22.20

Amount that Mrs Vaidev spent on the ring
= 22.20 + 54.30
= $76.50

Original price of the ring
= 76.50 + 8.50
