Mrs Flynn bought a dress and a ring at a discount. She spent a total of $49.20 on these two items. She spent $15.60 more on the ring than on the dress.

1. How much did she spend on the ring?
2. The total discount given for the two items was $28.80. She was given a 30% discount for the dress. What was the percentage discount given for the ring?

Amount spent on the dress = 1 u
Amount spent on the ring = 1 u + 15.60

Total amount spent on the dress and the ring
= 1 u + 1 u + 15.60
= 2 u + 15.60

2 u + 15.60 = 49.20
2 u = 49.20 - 15.60
2 u = 33.60

1 u = 33.60 ÷ 2 = 16.80

Amount that Mrs Flynn spent on the ring
= 16.80 + 15.60
= $32.40

Original price of the ring
= 32.40 + 21.60
= $54
