Mrs Tom bought a vest and a ring at a discount. She spent a total of $54.30 on these two items. She spent $25.50 more on the ring than on the vest.

1. How much did she spend on the ring?
2. The total discount given for the two items was $26.70. She was given a 40% discount for the vest. What was the percentage discount given for the ring?

Amount spent on the vest = 1 u
Amount spent on the ring = 1 u + 25.50

Total amount spent on the vest and the ring
= 1 u + 1 u + 25.50
= 2 u + 25.50

2 u + 25.50 = 54.30
2 u = 54.30 - 25.50
2 u = 28.80

1 u = 28.80 ÷ 2 = 14.40

Amount that Mrs Tom spent on the ring
= 14.40 + 25.50
= $39.90

Original price of the ring
= 39.90 + 17.10
