Mrs Reggie bought a coat and a necklace at a discount. She spent a total of $54.90 on these two items. She spent $33.30 more on the necklace than on the coat.

1. How much did she spend on the necklace?
2. The total discount given for the two items was $26.10. She was given a 40% discount for the coat. What was the percentage discount given for the necklace?

Amount spent on the coat = 1 u
Amount spent on the necklace = 1 u + 33.30

Total amount spent on the coat and the necklace
= 1 u + 1 u + 33.30
= 2 u + 33.30

2 u + 33.30 = 54.90
2 u = 54.90 - 33.30
2 u = 21.60

1 u = 21.60 ÷ 2 = 10.80

Amount that Mrs Reggie spent on the necklace
= 10.80 + 33.30
= $44.10

Original price of the necklace
