Mrs Archie bought a windbreaker and a ring at a discount. She spent a total of $71.10 on these two items. She spent $42.30 more on the ring than on the windbreaker.

1. How much did she spend on the ring?
2. The total discount given for the two items was $33.90. She was given a 40% discount for the windbreaker. What was the percentage discount given for the ring?

Amount spent on the windbreaker = 1 u
Amount spent on the ring = 1 u + 42.30

Total amount spent on the windbreaker and the ring
= 1 u + 1 u + 42.30
= 2 u + 42.30

2 u + 42.30 = 71.10
2 u = 71.10 - 42.30
2 u = 28.80

1 u = 28.80 ÷ 2 = 14.40

Amount that Mrs Archie spent on the ring
= 14.40 + 42.30
= $56.70
