Mrs Nick bought a sweater and a ring at a discount. She spent a total of $81.10 on these two items. She spent $61.30 more on the ring than on the sweater.

1. How much did she spend on the ring?
2. The total discount given for the two items was $18.90. She was given a 10% discount for the sweater. What was the percentage discount given for the ring?

Amount spent on the sweater = 1 u
Amount spent on the ring = 1 u + 61.30

Total amount spent on the sweater and the ring
= 1 u + 1 u + 61.30
= 2 u + 61.30

2 u + 61.30 = 81.10
2 u = 81.10 - 61.30
2 u = 19.80

1 u = 19.80 ÷ 2 = 9.90

Amount that Mrs Nick spent on the ring
= 9.90 + 61.30
= $71.20
