Mrs Ivan bought a blouse and a necklace at a discount. She spent a total of $53.50 on these two items. She spent $19.30 more on the necklace than on the blouse.

1. How much did she spend on the necklace?
2. The total discount given for the two items was $17.50. She was given a 10% discount for the blouse. What was the percentage discount given for the necklace?

Amount spent on the blouse = 1 u
Amount spent on the necklace = 1 u + 19.30

Total amount spent on the blouse and the necklace
= 1 u + 1 u + 19.30
= 2 u + 19.30

2 u + 19.30 = 53.50
2 u = 53.50 - 19.30
2 u = 34.20

1 u = 34.20 ÷ 2 = 17.10

Amount that Mrs Ivan spent on the necklace
= 17.10 + 19.30
= $36.40

= $15.60

Original price of the necklace
= 36.40 + 15.60
