Gillian baked some scones. She gave ¹₈ of the scones to her students and 87 to her friends. She was left with ¹₂ of the scones. She packed these into 14 boxes. Some boxes contained 6 scones while the rest contained 10 scones.

1. How many scones were packed into the 14 boxes?
2. How many boxes contained 10 scones?

= 1 - ¹₈ - ¹₂

= 1 - ¹₈ - ⁴₈
= ³₈

Number of scones that Gillian gave to her friends = 3 u

3 u = 87

1 u = 87 ÷ 3 = 29

Number of scones that were packed in 14 boxes
= 4 u
= 4 x 29
= 116

Number of scones that were packed in 14 boxes = 116

If all the scones are packed in boxes of 10, the number of scones needed
= 14 x 10
= 140

Small difference
= 140 - 136
= 4

Big difference
= 140 - 116

= 14 - 6
= 8
