Xandra baked some scones. She gave ¹₆ of the scones to her students and 120 to her friends. She was left with ¹₂ of the scones. She packed these into 17 boxes. Some boxes contained 8 scones while the rest contained 12 scones.

1. How many scones were packed into the 17 boxes?
2. How many boxes contained 12 scones?

Fraction of the scones given to her friends
= 1 - ¹₆ - ¹₂

= 1 - ¹₆ - ³₆
= ²₆

Number of scones that Xandra gave to her friends = 2 u

2 u = 120

1 u = 120 ÷ 2 = 60

Number of scones that were packed in 17 boxes
= 3 u
= 3 x 60
= 180

Number of scones that were packed in 17 boxes = 180

Boxes of 12	Scones	Boxes of 8	Scones	Total scones
17	204	0	0	204
16	192	1	8	200

If all the scones are packed in boxes of 12, the number of scones needed
= 17 x 12
= 204

Small difference
= 204 - 200
= 4

Big difference
= 204 - 180
= 24

Number of boxes of 8 scones 
= 24 ÷ 4
= 6

Number of boxes of 12 scones
= 17 - 6
= 11
