Fanny baked some scones. She gave ¹₂ of the scones to her relatives and 45 to her friends. She was left with ⁷₂₀ of the scones. She packed these into 15 boxes. Some boxes contained 5 scones while the rest contained 8 scones.

1. How many scones were packed into the 15 boxes?
2. How many boxes contained 8 scones?

Fraction of the scones given to her friends
= 1 - ¹₂ - ⁷₂₀

= 1 - ¹⁰₂₀ - ⁷₂₀
= ³₂₀

Number of scones that Fanny gave to her friends = 3 u

3 u = 45

1 u = 45 ÷ 3 = 15

Number of scones that were packed in 15 boxes
= 7 u
= 7 x 15
= 105

Number of scones that were packed in 15 boxes = 105

Boxes of 8	Scones	Boxes of 5	Scones	Total scones

If all the scones are packed in boxes of 8, the number of scones needed
= 15 x 8
= 120

Small difference
= 120 - 117
= 3

Big difference
= 120 - 105
= 15

= 15 ÷ 3
= 5

Number of boxes of 8 scones
= 15 - 5
= 10
