Rachel spent ¹₄ of her money on a jumpsuit and 4 skirts. The jumpsuit cost 2 times as much as each skirt. Rachel spent ¹₂ of her remaining money on a ring. She spent $115 more on the ring than on the 4 skirts.

Cost of 1 skirt = 1 u

Cost of 4 skirts
= 4 x 1 u
= 4 u

Cost of 1 jumpsuit = 2 u

Cost of 1 jumpsuit and 4 skirts
= 2 u + 4 u
= 6 u

Fraction of Rachel's money spent on each skirt
= ¹₆ x ¹₄
= ¹₂₄

(b)
¹₄ of her money = 6 u
³₄ of her money = 3 x 6 u = 18 u

Rachel's remaining money = 18 u

Cost of the ring
= ¹₂ x 18 u
= 9 u

Amount that Rachel spent more on the ring than on the 4 skirts
= 9 u - 4 u
= 5 u

5 u = 115

1 u = 115 ÷ 5 = 23

⁴₄ of her money = 4 x 6 u = 24 u

Amount that Rachel had at first
= 24 u
= 24 x 23
= $552
