Cost of 1 dress = 1 u

Cost of 4 dresses
= 4 x 1 u
= 4 u

Cost of 1 skirt = 3 u

Cost of 1 skirt and 4 dresses
= 3 u + 4 u
= 7 u

Fraction of Jane's money spent on each dress
= ¹₇ x ¹₃
= ¹₂₁

(b)
¹₃ of her money = 7 u
²₃ of her money = 2 x 7 u = 14 u

Jane's remaining money = 14 u

Cost of the ring
= ⁵₇ x 14 u
= 10 u

Amount that Jane spent more on the ring than on the 4 dresses
= 10 u - 4 u
= 6 u

6 u = 108

1 u = 108 ÷ 6 = 18

³₃ of her money = 3 x 7 u = 21 u

Amount that Jane had at first
= 21 u
= 21 x 18
= $378
