Cost of 5 vests
= 5 x 1 u
= 5 u

Cost of 1 blazer = 3 u

Cost of 1 blazer and 5 vests
= 3 u + 5 u
= 8 u

Fraction of Lynn's money spent on each vest
= ¹₈ x ¹₅
= ¹₄₀

(b)
¹₅ of her money = 8 u
⁴₅ of her money = 4 x 8 u = 32 u

Lynn's remaining money = 32 u

Cost of the ring
= ¹₂ x 32 u
= 16 u

Amount that Lynn spent more on the ring than on the 5 vests
= 16 u - 5 u
= 11 u

11 u = 242

1 u = 242 ÷ 11 = 22

⁵₅ of her money = 5 x 8 u = 40 u

Amount that Lynn had at first
= 40 u
= 40 x 22
