Cost of 5 shirts
= 5 x 1 u
= 5 u

Cost of 1 windbreaker = 3 u

Cost of 1 windbreaker and 5 shirts
= 3 u + 5 u

Fraction of Abi's money spent on each shirt
= ¹₈ x ¹₈
= ¹₆₄

(b)
¹₈ of her money = 8 u
⁷₈ of her money = 7 x 8 u = 56 u

Abi's remaining money = 56 u

Cost of the ring
= ¹₂ x 56 u
= 28 u

Amount that Abi spent more on the ring than on the 5 shirts
= 28 u - 5 u
= 23 u

23 u = 253

1 u = 253 ÷ 23 = 11

⁸₈ of her money = 8 x 8 u = 64 u

Amount that Abi had at first
= 64 u
= 64 x 11
