Cost of 3 blazers
= 3 x 1 u
= 3 u

Cost of 1 jacket = 2 u

Cost of 1 jacket and 3 blazers
= 2 u + 3 u
= 5 u

Fraction of Gwen's money spent on each blazer
= ¹₅ x ¹₄
= ¹₂₀

(b)
¹₄ of her money = 5 u
³₄ of her money = 3 x 5 u = 15 u

Gwen's remaining money = 15 u

Cost of the ring
= ³₄ x 15 u
= 11.25 u

Amount that Gwen spent more on the ring than on the 3 blazers
= 11.25 u - 3 u
= 8.25 u

8.25 u = 140.25

1 u = 140.25 ÷ 8.25 = 17

⁴₄ of her money = 4 x 5 u = 20 u

Amount that Gwen had at first
= 20 u
= 20 x 17
