PSLE Nora and Flynn bought durians at the prices shown below.
2 Large durians for $11
3 Small durians for $8
- Nora bought an equal number of large and small durians. She spent $68 more on the large ones. How many durians did she buy altogether?
- Flynn spent an equal amount of money on the large and small durians. What fraction of the durians he bought were small?
(a)
Number of large and small durians that Nora bought is the same. Make the number of large and small durians the same. LCM of 2 and 3 is 6.
Cost of 2 large durians = $11
Cost of 6 large durians = 3 x 11 = $33
Cost of 3 small durians = $8
Cost of 6 small durians = 2 x 8 = $16
Difference in the cost of buying 6 small durians and 6 large durians
= 33 - 16
= $17
Number of sets of durians
= 68 ÷ 17
= 4
Number of durians that Nora bought
= 4 x 2 x 6
= 48
(b)
Flynn spent an equal amount of money on the large and small durians. Make the amount of money spent on the large and small durians the same.
LCM of 11 and 8 is 88.
Number of large durians that Flynn bought
= 2 x (88 ÷ 11)
= 2 x 8
= 16
Number of the small durians that Flynn bought
= 3 x (88 ÷ 8)
= 3 x 11
= 33
Fraction of the durians that Flynn bought that were small
=
3316 + 33 =
